Seeing the Signs Your Pet Needs More Exercise

A key part of being a responsible, loving pet owner is knowing the signs of a physical or mental health issue with your pet. Making sure your pet gets enough daily exercise and attention can maintain his physical and mental health, and reduce his risk of behavioral issues, obesity, and health conditions or diseases. If you aren’t sure if your pet is getting enough daily exercise, make an appointment with your veterinarian for an evaluation. Watch out for these warning signs your pet isn’t getting the exercise he needs.

Gaining Weight

Weight gain might not be the first sign you notice if your pet isn’t getting enough exercise, but it might be the most dramatic and the most dangerous. Obesity increases your pet’s risk of heart, kidney, and liver disease as well as joint pain, arthritis, osteoarthritis, diabetes, and depression. Weight gain can be a symptom of an underlying health condition, so if your pet starts gaining weight, and you aren’t sure why, make an appointment with your veterinarian.

Displaying Destructive Behaviors

If your pet is suddenly displaying an increase in destructive behaviors, he may be frustrated, depressed, or anxious due to a lack of exercise. Consult with your veterinarian if you notice that your pet is:

  • Chewing, scratching, or clawing at furniture or people.
  • Fighting with other pets.
  • Peeing or pooping in inappropriate places.
  • Increasing vocalizations like barking, yowling, hissing, whining, or whimpering.
  • Acting restless.
  • Acting fatigued, listless, or depressed.
  • Getting into the trash more often.

Acting Hyperactive

Without the right amount of daily exercise, your pet will have a lot of pent-up energy. He may start acting restless or hyperactive. He may also display aggression, fight with other pets, or pace around the house. Making sure your pet gets more exercise or play time can curb these behaviors.

Make an appointment with your veterinarian today if you notice any of these changes in your pet.
