What is Canine Respiratory Illness and What Are the Symptoms?

Canine respiratory illness is a dangerous new respiratory infection that is affecting dogs across the United States. Veterinarians are not yet sure if the illness is viral or bacterial, what causes it, or what the most effective treatment method is. In order to protect your dog from canine respiratory illness, take the time to learn more about the illness, its symptoms, and what you should do if your dog is ill.

Symptoms of Canine Respiratory Illness

Recognizing early warning signs of respiratory illness in your dog will give them a better chance of a full recovery. The illness progresses quickly from cold-like symptoms to pneumonia. If pneumonia is untreated, it can become deadly. Contact your veterinarian if your dog has any of these symptoms:

  • Cough that lasts longer than a week.
  • Trouble breathing.
  • Wheezing.
  • Blue or purple gums.
  • Lethargy.
  • Disinterest in activities.
  • Lack of appetite.
  • Runny or red eyes.
  • Nasal or eye discharge.

Protecting Your Dog from Illness

While there is no vaccination for canine respiratory illness, you can offer your dog some protection by making sure they are vaccinated against other respiratory illnesses. You can also take these steps to protect your dog:

  • Avoid dog parks, grooming salons, boarding facilities, dog parks, doggy daycare, and homes with other dogs.
  • Don’t let your dog drink from a communal water bowl or play with communal toys.
  • Don’t let your dog sniff or touch noses with other dogs.
  • Don’t travel with your dog.

What to Do if Your Dog Has Symptoms

If your dog is ill and has any symptoms of canine respiratory illness, you should contact your veterinarian right away. While there is no universal treatment protocol, most veterinarians are using a multi-pronged approach: IV fluids, antibiotics, nebulizer treatment, oxygen therapy, and coupage.

Call your veterinarian right away if your dog has any symptoms of illness or is having trouble breathing.
