How Pet Appreciation Week Can Inspire You to Celebrate Your Pet

People have been celebrating Pet Awareness Week since 1981, when the American Veterinary Medical Association created the holiday. The holiday is designed to raise awareness of pet-related health issues, encourage pet owners to spend quality time with their pets, and share tips on pet care, health, and safety. Here are some of the ways you can celebrate your pet during Pet Awareness Week:

Take Cute New Pics with Your Pet

Even if your pet can’t see and appreciate photos of himself, it is still a good opportunity to spend some quality time together! You can either take photos with your pet, or take photos of your pet playing with a toy, enjoying an outing or activity, or just being his cute lovable self.

Plan a Fun Outing or Activity

If your pet likes going on outings, take him to a fun new destination. If your pet can’t really leave the house or doesn’t like going outside, plan a fun activity that the two of you can do together. Cats may enjoy playing with a new toy, while dogs rarely turn down a game of fetch. Of course, simply cuddling on the couch together may be your pet’s idea of a good time.

Organize a Party or Playdate

If your pet loves to socialize, organize a playdate with your friends’ pets. You can also just throw him a party and invite friends and family over to lavish him with attention!

Schedule an Annual Veterinary Visit

Your pet should visit the veterinarian every year to check his overall health and evaluate his weight, diet, and nutrition. Your veterinarian will also screen or test your pet for signs of illness or disease. Ask your veterinarian if your pet’s vaccinations, flea and tick prevention, heartworm medication, and microchip are up to date.

Your pet’s annual visit to the veterinarian will make sure that he stays happy, healthy, and safe year-round.
