Your pet needs a carefully balanced diet to ensure he is happy, healthy, and lives as long as possible. Sometimes, out of nowhere, pets might show signs and symptoms that their current diet is no longer working for them. Here are some warning signs that you should visit a veterinarian because your pet might need a new diet:
Changes to Hair, Coat, and Skin
If your pet’s diet isn’t working, you might notice that his coat has become dull and flaky. Your pet may develop skin issues like dry skin, red or irritated skin, inflammation, acne or bumps on the skin, and itchy skin. If your pet’s food already contains Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids, your pet may need a supplement or may have a food allergy to something else in his diet.
Personality Changes
Vitamin deficiencies, food allergies, and feeding your pet the wrong pet food can make your pet start behaving differently. He may display lethargy, fatigue, lack of interest in play or other activities, and weakness. If your pet is behaving differently than usual, visit your veterinarian for a health evaluation.
Weight Gain
The wrong pet food diet can cause your pet to gain weight. Weight gain in pets has been linked to diabetes, high blood pressure, congestive heart failure, arthritis, lethargy, and skin diseases and infections. If your pet is gaining weight, schedule a visit with your veterinarian to see if his diet is to blame.
Cognitive Changes
As your pet ages, feeding him the right food is even more important than ever. The wrong food can cause cognitive changes in your pet, such as disorientation, dementia, confusion, and balance problems. Consult with your veterinarian to ensure your pet is getting the right nutrition for his age and lifestyle.
If your pet is showing any of the warning signs above, please visit your veterinarian before making any changes to his diet. Your veterinarian can help you determine how and when to change your pet’s diet.
