What is Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy?

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) is the use of oxygen under pressure delivered in a specialized chamber built to withstand high internal pressure. – Diane Levitan, VMD, ACVIM

How Does Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy Work?

For the body to appropriately heal in any situation, oxygen supply to the body and the healing tissue is critical. When there is a lack of oxygen reaching the tissues (called Hypoxia), healing processes are hindered.

What Are The Indications For Therapy?

Acute conditions, including:

• Wounds (degloving, necrotic, non-healing)

• Burns and smoke inhalation

• Crushing injuries

• Head and spinal cord trauma

• Peritonitis

• Otitis

• Tissue Damage

• Allergic reactions

• Pancreatitis

• Spider or snake bites

• Osteomyelitis

• Exhaustion

Post-surgery cases, including:

• Gastric dilation and volvulus (GDV)

• Fracture repairs

• Amputations

• Gastrointestinal resection and anastamosis

• Surgical wound debridement

• Hemilaminectomy

• Ear canal ablation

What Are The Benefits of This Therapy?

Tissue perfusion and oxygen supply are two basic requirements for the body to heal. Oxygen therapy accelerates the normal healing mechanisms by increasing the concentration of oxygen dissolved in plasma, thereby facilitating delivery to the tissues with compromised vascular supply.

For post-operative patients, Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy can be greatly beneficial. Immediately, the patient will see a reduction of tissue swelling and inflammation, along with a decrease in pain associated. For many acute conditions, HBOT treatment greatly improves the prognosis for these animals and decreases the likelihood that they will become chronic problems.
