Breaking News From Old Town Animal HospitalHealth Alert

Dog Flu

The disease, also known as dog flu, has also been reported in Austin, Dallas, and other cities in Texas. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Texas is one of 38 states where dogs have been exposed to the H3N8 virus. Symptoms include fever, runny nose, and cough, but many infected dogs show no symptoms.  This airborne virus is not  transmitted to humans, cats, or other species.  The virus is spread from dog to dog. Tests can confirm if your pet has dog flu.  The best approach, however, is to get your dog vaccinated.  A vaccine is available at Old Town Animal Hospital.  All dogs should be immunized for their protection. MORE INFORMATION >

Distemper Outbreak

Houston area veterinarians have seen an alarming rise of canine distemper cases.  Distemper is almost always fatal.  Like dog flu, it begins with symptoms resembling a cold with runny nose, fever, and matted eyes.  It then affects the gastrointestinal tract and moves into the central nervous system. The virus is spread through coughing and contact with body fluids.  Puppies are most susceptible.  However, dogs that are not currently vaccinated for distemper are also extremely susceptible.

  • If your pet displays cold or flu symptoms, contact your veterinarian immediately.
  • Keep your dog isolated from other animals and outdoor areas where other animals frequent.
  • If you are unsure whether your pet?s vaccinations are current, revaccination will not harm your animal.

Parvo

Parvo is an extremely contagious virus that is spread from dog to dog or dog to cat.  Humans can also contract the disease.  Parvo is a problem in the Katy area. Parvo symptoms include labored breathing and shortness of breath.  Other symptoms include lethargy, vomiting, fever, and very foul-smelling diarrhea. If you suspect your pet might have the parvo virus, please inform our staff before bringing your pet in for treatment.  Special precautions must be taken to minimize the risk of spreading the disease. All pet owners should eliminate the risk of their dog contracting parvo.  A vaccine is available at Old Town Animal Hospital.  All pet owners should take immediate action to protect their pets.  Call for an appointment immediately to start the parvo vaccine cycle.

NOTE:  For puppies and dogs that have not yet received the complete parvo vaccine cycle, keep them off the ground as much as possible, especially in areas exposed to other dogs.
